Take my blood!!

Gay blood? No thanks!

Imarriage-825171_640n my hometown there is a blood bank bus driving around, encouraging people to give some of their blood to the hospitals. Finding out that giving just a little bit of blood could save someones life, really made me want to jump on the “give blood” wagon. So I went over to the bus and they gave me a form to fill. It said: “Men that have had sex with men are not allowed to give blood”.

It was like a punch in the face. Suddenly I felt discriminated and I could not give away my blood. Eight years later we still have this law…

For your protection!

On the Norwegian health authorities’ website, “giblod.no”, it says the background for these recommendations are not because of discrimination. Norway is apparently one of the sablood-732298_640fest countries when it comes to blood transfer. It’s also one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to giving blood, but in return we dont have enough blood givers.

I’ve only had two boyfriends in my life. We all got tested before having sex and we all tested negative. Since I’ve been in a monogamous relationship for over 7 years, you would think I could give blood by now. However, just having sex once with a guy rules me out for the rest of my life.

However if a man has “normal sex” with a woman that has HIV/aids, he’s put in quarantine for 6 months. If he then takes a HIV-test and it’s negative, he can start giving blood again.

blood-156063_640Even though giving blood is not a human right and we have these laws to protect the giver and receiver, choosing to not take blood from for instance two married healthy men, is to me absolutely illogical and a direct form of discrimination.

The good news is that this law will change according to NRK. How much it will change remains to be seen, but the fact that we are in 2015 and gay people are still discriminated like this, is just shameless…

    • I know! I think they’re scared of another round of the 80’s where a lot people got HIV from blood transfusion.

Also I dont think they want to invest in a better blood taking method where you evaluate each individual instead of a group. Hopefully a time will come where this will be prioritized and we have enough blood to give away at our hospitals.
